Another major resort, is circled by beautiful glades of deodars and flowering horse chestnuts. It is an ideal place for
walks, climbs, treks and picnic. For a lavish display of natural scenery, it is one of the principal snow places of the Kullu region. Manali is synonymous with streams and birdsong, forest and orchards and the grandeur of snow-capped mountains.
450-year-old Dhoongri temple dedicated to the goddess Hadimba. It is believed that here Bhima, the great Pandava of the Mahabharata, slew the demon Hadimb and married his sister Hadimba who was elevated to the status of a goddess. Manali also has a Tibetan monastery where there are several images of the Buddha, thanka paintings and a handicrafts centre. Vaishist 3.2km. away perched on a steep hill side across the Beas. Below its temple are hot sulphur springs, the water of which has been piped to bath rooms maintained by tourism department. Jagatsukh, 6km. South of Manali is the ancient capital of Kulu and known also for its temples.

Hadimba
Temple
Hadimba or Dhungiri temple in Manali is one of
the most important temples in the region. This four-story
wooden temple is located in the middle of a forest called
the Dhungiri Van Vihar.

Slippery
stones paths lead through the old village houses up to the
temple of Manu. Manali is named after the sage Manu who
meditated when he came in this area.

Temple
Tibetans have a base in Manali too. There is a
large modern Tibetan temple to the South of the bus stand
and also a small handicrafts centre.
Arjun
Gufa
On the left bank of the Beas, 5-km from Manali
near the village of Prini, is the 'Arjun Gufa' or the cave
of Arjuna. In here Arjuna practised austerities to get
Pashupata Ashtra or weapon from Lord Indra.
Gadhan
The kchoking Gompa
This Gompa dominates the Tibetan
area around the bottom of the Mall in Manali. The Tibetan
refugees built the Gompa in the late 1960's. The Gompa is
covered with brightly colored frescoes and a mid size
Buddhist statute. It also carries a list of the martyrs
killed in occupation of Tibet of 1987 to 1989.
