SURU ZANSKAR EXPEDITION |

This trip is combination of various
landscape and cultural explorations, first we discover the crowded
metropolitan Delhi, all most on sea level, then we move to barren
Leh (Ladakh) at an altitude of 3505 Mt., dominated by
Buddhist population. Finally we drive to Zanskar, via Kargil, though
green Suru valey populated with shiya Muslims and have close
look at Nun Kun massive around Tangole village. Our rafting will
commence from one of the villages on outer skirts of Padum and
continue for few days on Zanskar river down to Nimo. |

DAY
01. ARRIVE DELHI
Morning
arrive Delhi and transfer to hotel. Afternoon combined guided tour of Old
and New Delhi includes
Jammia Masjid Mosque, Cycle rickshaw ride through Chandni chowk, Red Fort,
drive through India Gate and Parliament house, Qutab Minar and Humayuns
Tomb.
DAY
02. DELHI - LEH
Fly
Morning
transfer to Delhi airport in time to catch Leh bound flight, arrive Leh
and check in at hotel. Rest of the day at leisure for acclimatization to
the altitude.
Leh
is a small picturesque town of about 10,000 people. Situated at 3505 Mt.
(11500 ft), the summer days are dry and sunny but nights can be cold. A
double line of "Manies", stone shelters for departed spirits,
protects the towns approaches. During these three days we will explore
some of the interesting monasteries of the area.
DAY
03. LEH – KARGIL
Drive 230 Km 7 Hrs
Morning
depart and drive to Kargil, the
District head quarters at 8,700 ft. (2650 Mt.) is one of the lowest town
in Ladakh. It was once a trading town of the road between Central Asia and
the Indian plains. En route visit Alchi, the remote 12th
century monastery, noted for its massive Buddha statues and lavish
woodcarvings and paintings. Lamayuru situated at the foot of Fotu
La pass, on Leh – Srinagar highway and a brief halt at Mulbekh to give a
look at rock cut Chamba statue. Arrive Kargil and check in at hotel /
camp.
DAY
04. KARGIL - RANGDOM
Drive 140 Km 5 Hrs
Morning
depart and drive through Suru valley to Rangdom, arrive and camp for
overnight.
The
Suru Valley, runs about 140 Km from Kargil up to the base Penizi-La pass
in to Zanskar via number of spectacular villages including Sanku and
Panikhar. Though the valley remains immobilized in winter by heavy
snowfall, its fields are well watered by streams from surrounding
mountains thus producing rich crops of wheat and barley. It is lush green
with the plantation of willow and poplar, rare in Ladakh. The road passes
by glaciers of the Nun – Kun massif to Rangdum Gompa on a hillock
overlooking a wide marshy plain.
DAY
05. RANGDOM – REMALA
Drive 75 Km (Prox.) 6 Hrs
Morning
visit Rangdom monastery and continue the journey. Gradually ascend and
reach Penzi La pass (4401 Mt.) after maneuvering number of hairpin bends.
On the top there is a tiny lake and marmots, an ideal place for picnic.
While long descend to Abrang, in Zanskar valley, the view is spectacular
that of impressive Durung Drung glacier. From Abrang the trail runs along
left bank of the Doda river a tributary to River Zanskar. About 40 Km
short of Padum, we camp at Remala from here we will commence our rafting
expedition on Doda River next morning. Rest of the day we spend in
preparing our gears.
DAY
06. REMALA – KASRSHA
Rafting 30 Km. 5 Hrs.
After
breakfast we wind-up our camp and adjust our gears in rafts. Our first day
of this water expedition will take us to Kasha near Padum here we plan to
camp for two nights which will allow us to explore Karsha and Padum.
During our 5 hours run we will take lunch break. The peaks around us are
above 6000 Mt. and the river sections is introductory, grade II, ideal for
first timers.
On
arrival by after noon, we will put up our camp and trek up to Kasha
monastery to witness evening prayers (if on)
DAY
07. IN KASHA
Full
day to Explore in and around Padum, capital of Zanskar is very lightly
populated, who are either Buddhist or Sunnite Muslim. The only Mosque of
Zanskar is in here. A few temples of very little interest are above the
township. The destruction brought by Mirza Haider in the 5th
Century and by Zoravar Singh in the 19th Century have
practically obliterated the fort. In and around Padum there are number of
interesting monasteries they include Pipiting, Phuktal, Sani, Karsha,
Tagarimo, Tonde and Zangla.
DAY
08. KARSHA – PIDMO 30
KM. 5 Hrs (Prox.)
After
a leisurely breakfast, we commence our rafting. From here we leave behind
road contacts for next few days till we reach Nimu and encounter the
rapids of grade II and III. By mid afternoon we will be able to set up our
camp and explore Pidmo and Hanomil villages, they fall on Padum –
Lamayury trail.
DAY
09. PIDMO -
NYERAK 20 Km. 4 Hrs (Prox)
After
leisurely breakfast, we again close our camp and continue our rafting
expedition through wild, narrow gorge, rather a grand canyon. The rapids
today we enjoy are of grade II. We camp for this night in the gorge below
Nyerak village. Rest of the day to relax and enjoy the wildlife. If lucky
we may be able to see some exotic animals.
DAY
10. NYERAK – LAMA GURU 35 Km. 7 Hrs (Prox.)
As
usual after breakfast, winding our camp, we begin the day long rafting
down to Lama guru. This runs through core of Zanskar rivers classic white
water rapids of grade III and IV where the river squeeze between a gap of
about 18 ft. We will have a picnic by a huge water fall at the
confluence of Markha river with river Zanskar. Camouflage of colors, Spire
and rock formations are the highlight of this run. Arrive and camp for
overnight.
DAY
11. IN LAMA GURU
A
day long hike and exploration (4 – 5 Hrs) of picturesque villages of
Kaya and Skiu, they fall on a beautiful Markha Valley trek. Late afternoon
we return to our camp at Lama Guru.
DAY 12.
LAMA GURU – NIMU 40 Km 8 Hrs. (Prox.)
After
an early breakfast, we wind up our camp and continue our expedition. Today
we encounter grade III and IV rapids and leave the river Zanskar which
joins river Indus at Nimu and we camp at its confluence.
DAY
13. NIMU – ALCHI 25 Km 4 Hrs. (prox.) After a
leisurely breakfast, we wind up our camp and drift down to Alchi. The
water at some places is calm, however, we will encounter rapids of grade
III and IV. Our rafting expedition end up at Alchi, here we take out our
rafts and join our vehicular transport. Before traveling for 65 km. to
Leh, we will explore Alchi, one of the few monasteries of the 11th
and 12th centuries to have survive, arrive Leh and check in at
hotel for overnight.
DAY
14. LEH – DELHI
Fly
Morning
transfer to Leh airport to catch Delhi bound flight, arrive Delhi and
transfer to hotel for overnight stay. Rest of the day at leisure.
DAY
15. DEPARTURE
Transfer
to airport for onward flight.
