For the
high mountain thrills perhaps nothing can surpass the magic of heli skiing. Under a deep blue sky, you are carried by a helicopter to a snow-draped peak, and after that there is nothing except steadily distancing whir of rotor blades, the sky and the snow. It is a thrilling experience as you rapidly zoom down the slopes. The icy winds slap your face and the swiftly slithering ‘hiss of skis’ reminds you that you are racing away on your own steam.
In January 1988 in collaboration with the famous Swiss born ski mountaineer, Sylvan Sudan, the exciting sport of Heli skiing was introduced in Kashmir. India is the first Asian country to offer heli skiing facilities. Heli skiing is the ultimate in the sport of adventure skiing. A sortie of ten minutes can carry the skiers to the top of a 14,000-feet high slope.
After Sylvan Sudan, the second famous Australian adventurer Roddy Mackenzie established his heli ski outfit for Manali in 1988, since then heli skiing is being operated in Himachal every winter.
